Day One Arrival in Arusha
Your adventure begins with a hotel pick-up from Kilimanjaro International Airport or your accommodation in Arusha. The short drive to your hotel takes approximately 30 minutes, depending on traffic. You will meet your experienced Take Five Africa Adventures guides for a detailed briefing about the trek, including safety procedures, equipment check, and route overview. Travelers have time to rest, explore the town of Arusha, and enjoy a welcome dinner featuring traditional Tanzanian cuisine while preparing for the challenging days ahead.

Day Two Lemosho Gate to Big Tree Camp
The trek begins with a drive from Arusha to Lemosho Gate, located at 2,060 meters above sea level, approximately 2.5 to 3 hours from the city. After registration at Kilimanjaro National Park, you start hiking through the lush montane rainforest, which is home to colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and various bird species.
The trail is shaded and well-trodden, providing a gentle introduction to the climb. The day’s hike covers 10 kilometers in approximately 4 to 5 hours, ascending gradually to Big Tree Camp. Here, you will set up camp, enjoy a warm meal, and rest while your guide provides advice on hydration and acclimatization.

Day Three Big Tree Camp to Shira One Camp
The hike continues through heath and moorland zones, where the forest opens to panoramic views of the Shira Plateau. Shira One Camp sits at approximately 3,500 meters, providing an excellent location for acclimatization.

Day Six Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp
The trek continues over 5 kilometers in 3 to 4 hours from Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp, at 4,000 meters. This relatively short hike allows additional acclimatization before the strenuous summit day. The trail traverses rocky terrain and sparse vegetation, offering breathtaking views of surrounding valleys and ridges.

Day Seven Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp
This is a crucial day as hikers cover 8 kilometers in 4 to 5 hours ascending to Barafu Camp, located at 4,600 meters, the final camp before the summit. The trail traverses the alpine desert zone, with minimal vegetation, rocky paths, and dramatic vistas. At Barafu, you will rest, have an early dinner, and receive a summit briefing. Sleep early is recommended to prepare for the midnight summit climb.

Day Eight Summit Day Uhuru Peak
The summit push begins around midnight, hiking in the dark with headlamps for approximately 6 to 8 hours to reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters, the highest point in Africa. The trail is steep and challenging, passing the stunning Stella Point before the final ascent. Upon reaching the summit, you can witness the breathtaking sunrise over the African plains.
After celebrating and taking photos, the descent begins to Mweka Camp at 3,100 meters, a long but scenic trek that allows your body to recover. The total descent distance is 15 kilometers, typically taking 5 to 6 hours.

Day Nine Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate and Return to Arusha

Afterward, you are transported back to Arusha, arriving in the late afternoon. This day allows relaxation, shower, and a celebratory dinner.
