Day Itinerary

Day 1 Arrival in Kilimanjaro and Transfer to Arusha
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our Take Five Africa Adventures team and transferred to your hotel in Arusha, approximately 1 hour away. Arusha serves as the perfect base to acclimatize and prepare for the climb. You will check into comfortable accommodation, enjoy a briefing session where your guides will discuss equipment, safety procedures, and trekking tips, and explore local attractions if time permits. Guests can also enjoy an optional visit to the Arusha Coffee Lodge or local markets to experience the authentic Tanzanian culture. Evening is reserved for rest and preparation for the upcoming ascent.

Day 2 Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut – Forest Zone Trek
The adventure begins at Marangu Gate, located at an elevation of 1,860 meters. From here, you trek through the lush rainforest zone, which spans approximately 8 kilometers and takes around 5 to 6 hours depending on pace. This zone is rich in biodiversity, including Colobus monkeys, various bird species, and unique tropical plants. Trekking is gradual, making it ideal for acclimatization. You will arrive at Mandara Hut, set at 2,700 meters, for your first overnight stay. Extra activities include photography, birdwatching, and nature walks around the hut area. Meals are prepared by your guides, featuring both local and international cuisine.

Day 3 Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut – Heath and Moorland Zones
This stage covers approximately 12 kilometers through heath and moorland vegetation, taking about 6 to 7 hours. The landscape gradually transforms from dense forest to open moorlands dotted with giant heathers and lobelias, offering spectacular panoramic views. Wildlife sightings include forest elephants and blue monkeys in the lower sections. You will arrive at Horombo Hut, located at 3,720 meters, where you will spend the night. Extra activities include short acclimatization hikes to nearby ridges, photography, and guided discussions on high-altitude trekking tips.

Day 4 Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut
This day is dedicated to acclimatization, a crucial step for a successful summit attempt. You may take a short hike to Zebra Rocks, located about 2 kilometers from the hut, allowing your body to adjust to the higher altitude of 3,800 meters. The hike takes around 2 to 3 hours and offers magnificent views of the Kibo and Mawenzi peaks. The rest of the day is spent relaxing, hydrating, and enjoying meals prepared at the hut. Optional activities include nature photography, reading, or interactive cultural sessions with guides who share stories about the Chagga people and mountain lore.

Day 5 Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut – Alpine Desert Zone Trek
The trek continues into the alpine desert zone, a stark and dramatic landscape at elevations ranging from 4,200 to 4,700 meters. Covering about 10 kilometers in 6 hours, you will experience the lunar-like terrain, volcanic rock formations, and sparse vegetation that characterize this high-altitude environment. This challenging stage prepares you for the final summit ascent. You will spend the night at Kibo Hut, strategically located to begin the summit climb in the early hours. Extra activities include photography of the unique volcanic landscape, star gazing, and evening discussions about summit strategies.

Day 6 Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut – Summit Day and Descent
The most memorable day begins with a midnight ascent from Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. The climb takes approximately 6 to 7 hours, depending on pace, and culminates with a breathtaking sunrise over the Tanzanian plains. After taking in the views and celebrating your achievement, you descend to Horombo Hut, a trek of about 11 kilometers, to rest and recover. Summit day offers optional photography sessions, meditation at the peak, and group celebrations.

Day 7 Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate – Descent and Farewell
The final trekking day covers a descent of approximately 20 kilometers, which takes about 5 to 6 hours to Marangu Gate. You traverse the moorland and forest zones, witnessing once more the diverse flora and fauna of Kilimanjaro. Upon reaching the gate, you will receive a certificate of achievement and be transferred back to Arusha, where a celebratory dinner awaits. Extra activities include optional visits to local souvenir markets or cultural workshops in Arusha.
